Why Choose Weight Loss Surgery?
Choosing Surgery as the way to deal with your obesity problem isn’t a decision you make lightly, and you should only do so when you have tried all the conventional ways to lose weight and they have not been successful for you. Everyone who comes to us has struggled to lose weight through diets in the past but has regained it all time after time, and patients are usually heavier when they come for surgery than when they started their cycle of yo-yo dieting. We understand this – we’ve been there ourselves!
Long term studies show that dieting simply doesn’t work for the vast majority of morbidly obese people, and the only successful permanent solution is surgery.
There are several different types of surgical procedure available.
To help our patients find a permanent solution to Obesity we provide:
- Gastric Banding
- Gastric Wrap (Laparoscopic Greater Curvature Plication – LGCP)
- Gastric Sleeve (Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy)
- Gastric Bypass (Roux-en Y & Omega Loop)
Please take the time to read about the different procedures on our website or call us to discuss them in detail. We are more than happy to explain the procedures in detail and give you free advice.
We will give you lots of information, answer any questions you have and advise you which procedure will give the best results for you, taking into account your medical history, your eating habits and your lifestyle. It is very important that you choose the right procedure – the one which will work best for you.
We specialise in weight loss surgery, have helped hundreds of patients through surgery and successful lasting weight loss afterwards AND we have had the surgery ourselves. WE DO NOT CHARGE YOU for advice and consultations when you are considering surgery with us .
Will I qualify for Weight Loss Surgery?
Being a suitable candidate for surgery depends on many factors, one of the most important is your B.M.I. – your Body Mass Index. The IFSO (International Federation for Surgery of Obesity) sets strict guidelines on the levels of B.M.I below which the risk of surgery under general anaesthesia is not justified, and these criteria have been adopted by the UK Government Health Advisory Body, the National Institute for Hospital/clinical Excellence (NICE). We use exactly the same BMI criteria when approving our patients for surgery.
In order to be accepted for surgery, you should normally have a BMI of 40+, or if it is between 35 and 40 you must have some medical condition caused by or made worse by Obesity – see list below. We WILL NOT approve surgery for patients with a BMI which is too low (some racial groups develop obesity-related illnesses at lower BMI and can be considered for surgery with slightly lower BMI). In addition to being sufficiently obese to justify a surgical intervention, you will have to show you have failed to control your weight by using conventional methods over a long period.
Please use our BMI calculator in order to calculate your BMI.
Obesity Surgery can be available on the NHS by referral from your GP to a bariatric surgeon, but the vast majority of patients who meet the NICE BMI criteria will find that local health authorities (Currently PCTs, soon to be GP panels) will not fund their surgery and only have very limited funding available to allow surgery for patients with a very high BMI who also have other serious weight related illness. Funding for this type of surgery within the NHS is getting even more limited in the current financial climate.
Because of this, the vast majority of patients must find a surgical solution to their obesity in the private sector.
Why choose us for Weight Loss Surgery?
We are specialists in Weight Loss Surgery and also in Cosmetic Surgery for patients who have lost significant weight after their surgery.
When you speak to Michael or Deborah, you will be talking to people who have all the necessary medical experience and expertise to give you detailed information and advice –and also have had weight loss surgery themselves – you will be given honest clear information and also the benefit of their personal experience of surgery and life after surgery. We prepare patients for surgery and take them through surgery every week, and give all the necessary long term support and aftercare to ensure the weight loss after the procedure is a permanent success. This preparation before surgery, and the coaching and help we give afterwards is just as important as the surgery itself – after all, you wouldn’t expect to be able to drive a car or ski without lessons – using the tool of Bariatric surgery is no different – you need help, support and training to get the most from it.
We don’t push patients towards any one particular surgery, We will not try to sell the idea to you, but simply give you all the information you will need to enable you to make an informed decision in your own time.
We tell everyone surgery isn’t a magic wand – you will have to work with it to get the best results, but it’s a marvellous tool to enable you to lose weight and sustain the weight loss easily -you will have to work with it to get the best results. We will help you to do this.
Please do some research on us. You will find many patients have posted comments on Weight Loss Surgeryforums (and on our facebook page) explaining why they chose us rather than any other provider, and how they value the personal care we give them. They have earned their successful weight loss following surgery through their own efforts, but will admit they needed the support, information & guidance we provide to help them do it!
Where is the surgery performed?
We will take you to The Bariatric and Metabolic Centre, Breclav Hospital in the Czech Republic for your surgery. Our Weight Loss Surgery there is always performed by Dr Michal Cierny PhD, one of Europe’s top Bariatric Surgeons. Here’s why we do this, rather than arranging your surgery in the UK
We are proud to work with Dr Cierny and his hospital because:
The levels of expertise, training and competence of medical and nursing staff in the Czech Republic are extremely high in relation to the U.K. and amongst the very best anywhere in Europe
The Bariatric Centre at Breclav Hospital is a department in this major hospital under the supervision of Dr Cierny which is devoted entirely to Weight Loss Surgery Procedures. Breclav is a very well equipped Hospital with state of the art technology and compares most favourably with the very best Private and NHS facilities here in the U.K., yet it provides affordable top quality care and treatment – with friendly English-speaking staff dedicated to your comfort and safety. (Please see the relevant pages on Dr Cierny and the hospital for more information.)
Levels of secondary infection in the Czech Republic are VERY LOW. MRSA, C.Difficile and other hospital-spread infections are a major worry for anyone considering elective surgery in the U.K. The rates of MRSA in the Czech Republic are less than half those of France and Belgium, and just a fraction of those in the U.K. Scrupulously clean, clutter-free hospitals and clinics, careful nursing and patient handling regimes and a commitment to take all necessary measures to avoid secondary infections ensures your safety when you come for surgery with us.
Some patients initially worry about having surgery outside the UK! – we understand this, and it is possible for us to arrange your surgery in the UK, but you will soon realise coming with us to Dr Cierny is in fact the safest choice you could possibly make for your surgery. To ensure you feel at ease we will be there to accompany you throughout your stay – Deborah is with you at the hospital all the time you are there to look after you and help you through all the various steps you have to take, before and after your surgery.
In the UK it isn’t possible to offer the Surgery Cost Protection we give to patients coming to Dr Cierny (in case of extended stay or complications following surgery) nor do you routinely get the full range of pre and post operative tests for UK surgery that we provide to all patients who come with us to Dr Cierny’s hospital. When you arrange your weight loss procedure through us with Dr Cierny in the Czech Republic you will have more detailed pre-operative tests and a longer stay in the hospital than you are likely to have in the UK or elsewhere. We believe this is essential to ensure your surgery is safe and your recovery is properly monitored. We will also give you all the support and afterecare you need when you return home.
The standard of surgery and level of care and protection you receive from Dr Cierny and his colleagues – and also from us because we are with you to look after you throughout your stay – is second to none, and much higher than you can routinely expect elsewhere.
The costs of Surgery and Hospital Care are much lower than in the UK, and the flight takes less than 2 hours – getting there is easy!
All this makes coming with us to Breclav hospital for your surgery a very good choice.
And it’s all within one basic fixed price!
Here are some good reasons why you should choose to have your surgery with us, and with Dr Cierny in his hospital:
- We make sure you are FULLY INFORMED to enable you to make the right decision and choose the surgery that is right for you.
- We make sure you are FULLY PREPARED for your visit for safe surgery
- OUR HAND-HOLDING SERVICE. We ACCOMPANY YOU during your trip to The Czech Republic for your surgery, and we are there in the hospital with you to help you

- HOSPITAL CARE. You stay in the hospital for THREE FULL DAYS AFTER SURGERY so the team can monitor you and make sure you are safe and fully recovered to go home.
- AFTERCARE. We support advise and monitor you for (at least two whole years) to make sure your weight loss after your hospital procedure goes according to plan – and you can contact us AT ANY TIME for help and advice.
- EXPERT ATTENTION. The standard of medical care and support you will receive from Dr Cierny, his team of experts and from us is on a par with the VERY BEST – ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD
- SURGERY COST PROTECTION. All our weight loss procedure costs are FULLY INCLUSIVE. Your package price includes the cost of any extra days in ICU, re-operation or extended stay should there be any complications. OTHER PROVIDERS DO NOT INCLUDE THIS!!
ALL AT A MUCH LOWER PRICE THAN YOU WOULD PAY AT HOME.
A few words about Dr Michal Cierny and Breclav Hospital.
We work in exclusive partnership with Michal Cierny MD.PhD. Dr Cierny is a very experienced and well known specialist surgeon in the field of laparoscopic obesity surgery, with an international reputation and a very high success rate – his mortality rate is zero, and he has carried out many hundreds of laparoscopic bariatric procedures over the years.. All obesity procedures are carried out at his hospital in Breclav close to the Austrian Border near Brno, which is the second largest city in the Czech Republic and a delight to visit. In addition to his surgical experience, Dr. Cierny is responsible for the founding of the “Bandingklub” in The Czech Republic. This is a patient support association to help provide a forum and give information to obese patients who have undergone Weight Loss Surgery or who are interested in bariatric surgery. This has been so successful that the idea has spread and there have been similar groups with the same name forming all over the Czech Republic. If you wish to visit the Bandingklub website you can do so here. Dr Cierny also collects and evaluates statistics on results of weight loss surgery, and has designed a website to monitor results which can be used by surgeons throughout Europe. His paper in the IFSO Congress in Paris (2009) was on this topic. You can visit this website here http://wlsr.eu/
Please take the time to visit the pages on this site which give more information on Dr Cierny and the hospital.
