We know that deciding on Weight Loss Surgery, or a non-surgical procedure such as a stomach balloon as the way to deal with your obesity problem is something you only come to when you have tried all the conventional ways to lose weight and they have not been successful for you.

You may have been able to lose weight through diet, but haven't been able to sustain the weight loss. Opting to have surgery or an Intragastric balloon is a major decision, and one which requires a lot of thought. You need to be absolutely sure it is the right choice for you, and that you are ready for the changes it will bring. We believe it is essential that before you make your decision you understand as much as possible about the procedure, how it works and what we do to enable you to have a safeprocedure and successful weight loss afterwards. No surgery is a magic wand - it doesn't do all the work for you, but it is a marvellous tool to enable you to lose weight and sustain the weight loss easily -you will have to work with it to get the best results. We will help you to do this.

When you arrange your weight loss procedure through us with Dr Cierny in the Czech Republic you will have more detailed pre-operative tests and a longer stay in the hospital than you are likely to have in the UK or elsewhere. We believe this is essential to ensure your surgery is safe and your recovery is properly monitored. Don't worry! You are not left to fend for yourself in unfamiliar surroundings. We will be in The Czech Republic with you during your stay and we will be there for you to look after you and help you through all the various steps you have to take, before and after your surgery. We will also give you all the support you need when you return home.

WHICH PROCEDURE IS RIGHT FOR ME?

Whether you are a suitable candidate for surgery or not depends on many factors, and one of the most important is your B.M.I. - your Body Mass Index. The IFSO (International Federation for Surgery of Obesity) set strict guidelines on the levels of B.M.I below which surgery is not allowed, and these criteria have been adopted by the UK Government Health Advisory Body, the National Institute for Hospital/clinical Excellence (NICE). NO RESPONSIBLE SURGEON WOULD IGNORE THESE RULES.

In order to be accepted for surgery, you must have a BMI of 40+, or if between 35 and 40 you must have some medical condition caused by or made worse by Obesity - see list below. Dr Cierny WILL NOT approve surgery for patients with a BMI which is too low. In addition to having a high enough BMI, you will have to show you have tried unsuccessfully to control your weight by using conventional methods over a long period.

Please use our BMI calculator in order to calculate your BMI.

If you are Obese or severely overweight - with a BMI of around 30 or more, but your BMI is not high enough for a full surgical procedure, or you think you simply need a "kick start" to help modify your eating habits & lose weight, then please refer to our information on the HELIOSPHERE AIR-FILLED BALLOON

The problems of being overweight and all the associated risks and damage caused by obesity to our general health are dramatically increasing in the U.K. Obesity levels have tripled in England over the past two decades, and now official statistics show that approximately 33%  of British men and 28% of British women will be clinically obese by 2010. (with a B.M.I. - Body Mass Index - of over 30)

Many of us who are overweight have tried in vain over the years to lose weight. We are bombarded with all kinds of diets, pills and products that promise success - often these products and diets are extremely expensive, and they just don't work long term, so we end up blaming ourselves for our "failure" to make them work!

Almost all studies show that diets very rarely succeed long term in helping us to achieve lasting weight reduction. How many of us dieters have suffered the yo-yo effect, gaining back more than we lost after we finish with the diet. Successive failures to lose weight can cause us deep psychological problems and create very low self esteem.

Statistics show that it is extremely difficult for those of us with severe obesity to achieve long-term weight loss with dietary or behavioural modifications alone.

Statistics also show that a surgical weight loss procedure (Bariatric Surgery) is the ONLY way for most of us who suffer from morbid obesity to correct our weight and regain a normal stable weight for a sustained length of time.

Surgery in itself is NOT a magic solution, but it is a great tool which can allow us to bring about those changes to our diet, to our whole relationship with food and to our nutritional health that would be impossible by any other means.

Obesity Surgery is, of course, available on the NHS, by referral from your GP to a bariatric surgeon, but the vast majority of those who meet the BMI criteria will find local health authorities will be unable to fund surgery, and will set much more stringent criteria for surgery in an attempt to direct their very limited financial resources to the most urgent cases.

Because of this, most Weight Loss Surgery patients are forced to seek a surgical solution to their obesity in the private sector. Some prefer to arrange surgery close to home in the UK, but the costs can be EXTREMELY high.

We believe the standards of care we give, the way we inform and prepare our patients for their procedure, and the safety of the surgical and other weight loss procedures we offer are second to none.  We also believe our approach, in terms of accompanying patients through their procedure in The Czech Republic, and maintaining contact with them, providing full aftercare and support after they return to the UK is the best way to ensure a safe and trouble free experience of obesity surgery and the Intragastric Balloon, and long term weight loss success after the procedure.

The weight loss solutions we offer are all carried out in The Czech Republic, as are all our cosmetic procedures. The reasons for this are simple.

  • The levels of expertise, training and competence of medical and nursing staff in the Czech Republic are extremely high in relation to the U.K., and amongst the very best anywhere in Europe.

  • The hospital we have carefully chosen as our partner is modern, very well equipped with state of the art technology and compares most favourably with the best Private and NHS facilities here in the U.K., yet it provides affordable top quality care and treatment - with friendly English-speaking staff dedicated to your comfort and well being - AT A FRACTION OF THE COST YOU WOULD BE MADE TO PAY AT HOME.

  • The levels of secondary infection in the Czech Republic are VERY LOW. MRSA, C.Difficile and other hospital-spread infections are a major worry for anyone considering elective surgery in the U.K. The rates of MRSA in the Czech Republic are less than half those of France and Belgium, and just a fraction of those in the U.K. Scrupulously clean, clutter-free hospitals and clinics, careful nursing and patient handling regimes and a commitment to take all necessary measures to avoid secondary infections ensures your safety in our partner hospitals and clinics.

We are proud to work in exclusive partnership with Michal Cierny MD.PhD.  Dr Cierny is a very experienced and well known specialist surgeon in the field of laparoscopic obesity surgery, with an international reputation and a verh high success rate. All obesity procedures are carried out at his hospital in Breclav close to the Austrian Border near Brno, which is the second largest city in the Czech Republic and a delight to visit. In addition to his surgical experience, Dr. Cierny is responsible for the founding of the "Bandingklub" in The Czech Republic. This is a patient support association to help provide a forum and give information to obese patients who have undergone Weight Loss Surgery or who are interested in bariatric surgery. This has been so successful that the idea has spread and there have been similar groups with the same name forming all over the Czech Republic. If you wish to visit the Bandingklub website you can do so here. Dr Cierny also collects and evaluates statistics on results of weight loss surgery, and has designed a website to monitor results which can be used by surgeons throughout Europe. His recent paper in the IFSO Congress in Paris (2009) was on this topic. You can visit this website here http://wlsr.eu/
